About Pavan Asur Vijaya Kumar
Hello there, I’m Dr. Pavan Kumar Asur. I am a postdoc at the Institute of Lightweight Design and Structural Biomechanics (ILSB) at TU Wien, Austria. I completed my PhD at IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca, Italy in Computational Mechanics under the guidance of Prof. Marco Paggi and the University of Seville, Spain in Industrial Engineering under the co-supervision of Prof. Jose Reinoso. Post receiving my Doctoral degree in June 2022. I was awarded the best PhD Thesis from GMA-GIMC Italy in 2023. I did my joint master's degree (2016-2018) from Erasmus Mundus “MathMods: Mathematical Modelling in Engineering” with the University of L’Aquila(UAQ), Italy, University of Hamburg (UHH), Germany, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona(UAB), Spain with majors in Numerics of Partial Differential Equations.

Nov-2021-May-2022
Visiting Researcher
Université Gustave-Eiffel (Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée )
My research is focused on SIMP phase-field topology optimization to increase fracture toughness in Functionally Graded Materials and fatigue loads under supervision of Prof. Julien Yvonnet and Prof. Qi Chang HE at Laboratoire Modélisation et Simulation Multi Echelle (MSME)
Nov-2019-June 2022
Visiting Researcher
University of Seville, Spain
Research: Focused on the fracture in Long Fiber Reinforced Composites using a multi-phase field approach with Prof. José Reinoso Cuevas in the group Elasticity and Strength of Materials Group (GERM).
Nov-2018-June 2022
PhD Candidate in Computational Mechanics
IMT School of Advanced Studies, Lucca.
My PhD thesis "Variational and Cohesive Methods for Fracture Mechanics in Statics and Fatigue" focused on developing multi-field methods for fracture mechanics problems. This research was conducted under the supervision of Prof.Marco Paggi in the group Multi-Scale Analysis of Materials(MUSAM).
2016-2018
Joint Masters Degree Program in Mathematical Modelling for Engineering
Erasmus Mundus - MathMods,
Joint degree from University of L'Aquila, Italy, University of Hamburg, Germany, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain.
2016-2018
Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, India
Awarded Gold Medal for Securing Highest Marks and ”Best Outgoing Student-2015 Award ”.
The award is given for involvement and achievements based on Curricular, Co-curricular
and extra Curricular Activities among all individuals of all branches of university (approximately among 1000 Students).
Projects Undertaken
Master Thesis
Metastability and Slow Motion Dynamics of Cahn-Hilliard Equation
Supervisor : Dr. Corrado Lattanzio, University of L’Aquila, Italy
We prove the metastability using eigenvalue information of the linearised operator. We also create continuously adaptive
switching numerical scheme which can capture metastability and spinoidal decomposition which happens at multiple
time scales
Apr-May 2017
Flow Around the tip of vitreous cutter
Modelling Camp, University of Hamburg, Germany. Supervisor: Dr.Rodolfo Repetto , University of Genova, Italy Formulated & simulated mathematical model of flow around the tip of Vitreous cutter to assist the effect of pressure and velocity on the retinal wall during Vitrectomy surgery
2017
Time series, Modelling and Forecast of Direct Normal solar Irradiance
The project uses 10 years solar irradiance data to predict the future using ARIMA(4,1,1)*(1,1,0) model with seasonality
component
2016
Formula Hybrid
We developed a student formula type hybrid car for the competition held in New Hampshire, USA and also won 9th best team award. I Worked as the FEA analysis head of the team.
Bachelor Thesis
Design, Analysis and Fabrication of Mobile Robot
Supervisor : Dr. Jharna Majumdar, NMIT, Bangalore,India Design, analysis and fabrication of a robot platform capable of tracking human movement. We also developed forward and reverse gear transmission for the robot in Centre for Robotic Research, NMIT, India and funded by Defence Research Organisation, India..
2015
Team Vice captain and Analysis lead
Race car Aerodynamic study, Optimisation of restrictor for exhaust using CFD . FE-Analysis and Design of experiments
2012-2014
The India’s first twin nano satellites developed by consortium of 7 universities under ”Indian Space research Organisation (ISRO). We developed a mathematical model for the movement of satellite around earth which can be used for thermal modelling of the satellite.
Student Satellite (STUDSAT-2)
